| Solar thermal technology is not the same as a solar panel, or photovoltaic technology. Solar thermal energy generation concentrates the light from the sun to create heat through a glass evacuated tube or flat plate, and that heat is circulated and controlled in a pressurized closed loop piping system to a heat exchanger (which is a coil inside a storage tank). From the Storage tank that heat can be used for domestic hot water, building heating, and/or a pool heating. The working fluid that is heated by the concentrated sunlight is water or a glycol mix, so that it will not freeze in northern climates. We recommend evacuated tube arrays for US northern climates and flat plate arrays for US southern.
